Day 13 in Greece: Resting

We have spent a lot of time resting in the Airbnb. After a few days we go a little crazy, but it is nice having a rest day after spending a day walking around in the sun for 12 hours. With that, there are a few things I have come to appreciate about the way Greek buildings are designed.

Everything is Marble

Not sure if this is because marble is easy to find, or if it is to keep everything cool, but everything is marble or tile. The floors stay cool and everything is easy to clean.

Metal Shades

There are metal shades that close over the doors, they seem a little intimidating at first but MAN do they keep out the heat. They keep everything cool and as a bonus – you feel very safe at night.

Awnings

Every apartment has an awning that stretches low over the porches, they help keep the sun off the windows and leave the porch cool. I am always a bit surprised how low they extend, but they do a great job of keeping the sun away while letting the light in.

Clotheslines

Ever since my time in Australia, I have loved clotheslines. These were not something I grew up with because I grew up in the rainiest part of the US, but have grown to absolutely love them. The wind gently moving clothes and sheets is mesmerizing, the sun helps kill any leftover bacteria, and everything dries so fast in the hot summer sun.

The most lovely thing about this country? Even when we are resting, taking a day off, we are still able to soak in the differences in the culture in just the little things we interact with everyday.
